Defining an e-book complier

You have managed to complete an outstanding e-book, you have proofread it and established some stunning graphics for it. All that is left is actually putting it all tighter. In case you don’t know this yet, there is a certain type of software available for you needs, a software program called an e-book compiler.

Once you have decided to start looking for one, you should know that you will tumble across various types of compliers that perform various tasks. So before buying one, figure what you’ll need it to do.

E-book compilers are programs that convert your text files, no matter the format they are in (htlm, txt and so on) into a single PDF file.

So, if your e-book has graphics that required HTML code to make, then you must look for an e-book compiler that extracts htlm code and puts it into a single executable file. Be warned that this type of compliers might need you to understand how to work with HTML tagging. If you don’t you should consider using programs like Dreamweaver or frontpage.

Choosing an e-book compiler

With the great density of e-book compilers that are currently on the market, one can get confused when trying to get one for himself. To try and understand just witch one would better server your needs, you need to get some assistance.

First, work out a list in witch you can define your precise needs:

- Mark the program you used to make your e-book files. If you used a HTML editor and your pages are in HTLM code, then you should be able to find a vide variety of compiles for your files. If you used PDF format, the compilers are fewer, but you can still find some professional ones.
- When deciding upon a program decide whether you will be able to manage it. Look through the instructions and guides provided and make sure they are clear enough. It’s best if you can find programs that provide step by step “wizards” to help you create your e-book. Look for companies that offer free trials for the compilers, so you can test what you are about to buy.
- Check out how many security features the compiler can include, if any. If you want to make an e-book that will be marketed, then you wouldn’t want readers to be able to modify anything in it.
- See what scripts the compilers have. You will need scripts for introducing a fancy menu or links, search dialogues, surveys and other user interactive devices.
- Last but not least is the price of the compiler. Keep in mind that if you want best results you don’t automatically have to buy the most expensive compiler. You simply have to look for the most affordable compiler that suits your needs.

Keep in mind that e-book compiler will require a respective internet browser, usually internet explorer or Netscape communicator. Not all work on Firefox, so download one of the first two browsers. In the about page of the software manual of your compiler you will find what browser it requires if any and what version it should be. If there are no information regarding this, it means that the compiler runs on any PC with Windows.

If however there are requirements, then you will install that browser. It’s often provided on the CD or in the archive the compiler was in. Install it and set its functions according to the compiler’s user manual.

The security issues some e-books have can be easily solved by choosing a good compiler and making use of his security options. In your compiler’s security setting you should be able to find options that allow you to restrict users from modifying certain or all pages, and also to let them type in text whenever you want in special marked fields. A good idea for e-books that are to be sold is a password protection, so people would buy your book and receive a special password along with it.

Checking the security of your compiler is simple. You only need to open an e-book and then go to the windows temp folder. If there you can find various files from the respective e-book, then it’s not a good sign. The presence of files in the temp folder mean the compiler did not correctly compress the files, and when a user is readying the e-book the files are being decompressed to original state, therefore the data in your e-book is no longer prevented from theft.

If you can buy an e-book compiler that can work online and graduately generate password for each customer that buy the book, at the very moment they chose to buy it, then it will make the payment options easier and more accessible, as many people prefer to have various options when they are buying online.

You will also want to check size restrictions the compiler might have. Many compliers have a size limit for e-books. Look for a complier that supports at least 2GB. This means it will generate an e-book with 2 GB HTLM code, and if you want more, you can choose to compress the data and then squeeze in almost 6 GB of data.

Try to find out what operating system the compiler requires. Many compilers require at least Windows XP, and many of them don’t work on Vista. If you are using windows vista you need to make sure the program vendors have issued an update that makes the compiler compatible with Vista.

It might come as a given thing to you, but you would be surprised to see that many compilers don’t offer extraordinary support. So when choosing your compiler make sure it included an installation program that will help you choose what options to install, where to install it, where to place your shortcuts and so on. Check out the support page of the company that developed it and see if they offer 24/7 online or phone support. It’s crucial for you to have someone that can help whenever you need it.

You may also want to try and buy one of the bugless compilers that are out there. This is easily done by checking the time the compile spend since its first release. The compilers that have a bigger version number are more likely to have fewer bugs.

Try to buy from reliable site and don’t let yourself charmed by a good sales copy. Check out if everything said in it it’s true and make sure the company makes you sign a service agreement, this way you know they have to help you when you find yourself in trouble.

How to analize your website traffic

January 22nd, 2008

By Louis B.

Every one that has a website should consider tools that help analyze the website traffic. Their value is incommensurable when it comes to properly understanding and interpreting the hits your site gets. But in order to do so, you need to know how to read the statistics provided by the analyzer.

When you choose a web host, you will most definitely get some kind of information about the number of visitors you site gets, and based on that you need to make your own statistics and interpretations. But unless you are skilled in analyzing website traffic, you can find all that data a bit too much and you might easily get lost into details, as you try to make some sense of it. You need to follow a guide that will teach you how to analyze the usual data, the visitors your site gets daily, weekly, monthly.

Reading the number of visitor over a determined period of time (like a day for example) is the only way you can determine how much activity there has been on your business site on that period, and from here draw certain conclusions. Many think that if they see the traffic is growing then for sure their website is growing and doing better. But it’s a wrong conclusion, because you need to know what those visitors do once accessing your website.

The hits your website gets aren’t necessary targeted traffic. A hit is produced when someone has opened a page of you website, regardless if he has done so unwillingly or if he is intending to close it immediately. Furthermore, the server registers a hit whenever a bit of information (like a graphic) gets transferred from the server to the visitor’s computer. So, if you have a website with loads of pictures on it, when someone opened a page he will register as many hits not just one, his visit will be stored as a number of hits equal to the number of pictures on that page.

In order to interpret the data properly you have to deal with a great number of visitors, because statistics become more and more accurate when the number of cases they analyze grows. So if you get thousands of visitors a month it’s quite possible that you can work out some visitor trends that can work, but if you have few visitors daily, then when you try to work out something it’s highly probable that an anomalous visitor will alter the conclusions.

When you are preparing to analyze the traffic your website gets is because you want to know how appreciated you site is. One way to figure this out is to analyze how easily do visitors leave your website. You need to add up times visitors spend on your site, then work out an average value. If the average value is situated somewhere beneath a minute, it means something is wrong with you website and that it doesn’t offer interesting information or maybe it’s design is so boring that people simply close the site right away.

Another reason that can make people spend less time on you website can be mistyped keywords. Maybe you are not using the correct keywords and that is why you get unwanted traffic. Try and figure out what is wrong and change it, and after you did that, take some more time to further analyze your website traffic so you can see if your changes worked.

Another thing that can pop right out of a proper analysis is determining how visited are certain pages on your website. For example, if a page that contains crucial information is rapidly exited by people, it means there is something wrong with it. Maybe it loads too slowly, or the graphics are annoying, or maybe the link to it suggests there is something else there.

Also, when you see that people stay longer on a certain page that you didn’t really pay attention to, then try to add to that page sales or marketing information so you can make your site more effective.
A major problem with every online business website is its contact or buy page. People have the annoying habit of exiting this page right away, without spending any time to read anything. If this is happening to your website as well, you might tend to think that the visits are in vain. But, you should start thinking that people browse hundreds of web stores and service companies until they decide what they want, and even if they didn’t order something right away it doesn’t mean they won’t come back later to buy it. Maybe they just needed to get informed on something, so they know where to find it when they want to buy. In statistics you will be able to see the exact exit page every visitor chooses. So, you can observe that not everyone will exit your site on the contact page. Maybe some exit on one page, others on another. It’s not a problem as long as you can’t make out a certain exit trend toward a page. If you do make out a trend, then you need to focus on that page or on the information on it, and try to resolve its defects.

If you think you have performed a proper analyze of the traffic statistics, then you will need to focus on the things that bring people to your site, such as keywords. Browse through keywords that bring you visitors and decide if they are targeted or not. Because if you a website that is selling Health Products Books and you receive many visitors that performed a search on Heath products, then they will quickly exit your website as they want to buy a product, not information about it.

Pay lots of attention to keywords chosen as they are the most important thing that can make you online business work. You will need to study each keyword and phrase in particular and decide which are the ones that need to be kept and witch need changing.

When analyzing statistic you might come across a wonderful phrase that brings visitor to your website: your business name. If you find this repeatedly, then you needn’t worry anymore because people know you and choose to use your services.
